Warning Signs

8 Signs You Need a Switchboard Upgrade

Don't ignore these warning signs — an outdated switchboard is one of the leading causes of electrical fires in Australian homes.

1

You Have Ceramic or Porcelain Fuses

The biggest red flag. Ceramic fuses are a 1960s technology that can't protect against modern electrical loads and are a fire risk.

2

Breakers Keep Tripping

Frequent tripping means your circuits are overloaded or there's a fault. Your board may need more circuits or a full upgrade.

3

No Safety Switch / RCD

RCDs protect you from electric shock. NSW regulations require them on all circuits — older homes often have none or only one.

4

Lights Flicker or Dim

Flickering lights when you turn on appliances points to a struggling switchboard or faulty wiring that needs professional attention.

5

Burning Smell or Scorch Marks

Any burning smell from your switchboard is an emergency. Turn off your mains and call us immediately — do not delay.

6

Planning to Install an EV Charger

EV chargers require a dedicated 32A circuit. Older boards often can't handle this load safely without an upgrade.

7

Your Home Is 20+ Years Old

Homes built before 2000 often have undersized switchboards not designed for today's electrical demands. Time for a check.

8

Insurance Company Flagged It

Many NSW insurers now require RCD protection on all circuits. An outdated board can void your policy in the event of a fire.

Not sure if your switchboard needs upgrading? Don't guess. Call Sam for a free assessment — we'll tell you honestly whether you need work done, and give you a fixed-price quote if you do.

What You Get

What's Included in a Switchboard Upgrade

A complete, modern switchboard upgrade — not just a band-aid fix.

New Consumer Mains Board

A modern DIN-rail switchboard with a main switch, replacing the old fuse board entirely. Sized correctly for your home's current and future needs.

RCD / Safety Switch on All Circuits

Residual Current Devices (RCDs) on every circuit — required by current NSW regulations. These cut power in 30 milliseconds to prevent electrocution.

Modern Circuit Breakers

Replacing all ceramic fuses with correctly rated circuit breakers — automatically cutting power on overloads or short circuits, preventing fires.

Certificate of Compliance (CCEW)

Every switchboard upgrade is certified and reported to NSW Fair Trading. Your compliance certificate is issued on the day — essential for insurance and resale.

Fixed-Price Quote Upfront

No hidden extras. We assess your switchboard, give you a firm price before we start, and stick to it. You won't get a bill shock invoice.

Common Questions

Switchboard Upgrade FAQ

A standard switchboard upgrade typically costs between $800–$2,500 depending on the size of your board and number of circuits. More complex jobs (large homes, 3-phase power, extensive rewiring) may cost more. We always provide a fixed-price quote before starting — no surprises.
Typically 3–6 hours for a standard switchboard upgrade. We work as efficiently as possible and will give you an exact timeframe before starting. We recommend planning to be without power for half a day to be safe. We'll restore power before we leave and test every circuit.
Many NSW insurers now require RCD/safety switch protection on all circuits as a condition of cover. An outdated switchboard with ceramic fuses can result in a claim being denied in the event of an electrical fire. We issue a Certificate of Compliance (CCEW) after every upgrade — your insurer will want to see this.
Absolutely — and it's the most efficient way to do it. Combining a switchboard upgrade with EV charger installation in a single visit saves you time and money. We can plan your new board with a dedicated 32A EV circuit built in from the start.
We ask that an adult over 18 be present at the start of the job to confirm the scope of work and provide access. You don't need to stay for the entire job, but someone should be available at the end to sign off and receive the compliance certificate.
A circuit breaker protects your wiring and appliances from overloads and short circuits. An RCD (safety switch) protects people — it detects even tiny current leakages and cuts power in 30 milliseconds to prevent electrocution. Both are required. A modern switchboard upgrade includes both on every circuit.
